Overview

Professional concrete work installation in the Greater Toronto Area

Concrete is the structural backbone of nearly every project we touch β€” and we treat it that way. From the gravel base under a new patio to the rebar inside a retaining wall, every detail affects how long the finished work will last. Our crews handle every phase in-house: excavation, base prep, formwork, reinforcement, pour, finishing and curing. The result is concrete that survives Ontario's freeze-thaw cycles, road-salt loading and clay-soil movement for decades.

What we build

Our residential concrete services cover the full range: structural slabs, garage pads, walkways, patios, foundation pours and repairs, retaining walls, steps, porches, driveway aprons, window wells and stair wells. We work on new builds and on additions to existing homes, with the structural detailing required by the Ontario Building Code.

Base preparation β€” the part that decides longevity

Most failed concrete work fails at the base, not in the slab. We excavate to undisturbed subgrade, install compacted granular base in lifts (typically 4–6 inches of Granular A over a properly drained subbase), and verify compaction. For GTA clay soils, we often increase base thickness and add subdrainage to prevent frost heave. This is the unglamorous work that decides whether a slab holds up for 30 years or cracks in 3.

Reinforcement & control joints

Plain concrete cracks. Reinforced, properly jointed concrete cracks predictably and stays serviceable. We use rebar mats, fibre reinforcement or welded wire mesh per the application, and we cut tooled or saw-cut control joints at the correct spacing β€” typically 24–36 times the slab thickness. Expansion joints are detailed where the slab meets the house, posts or other rigid structures.

Mix design for Ontario weather

For exterior residential work in Ontario we specify air-entrained, freeze-thaw-resistant mixes with strength matched to the application β€” 25 MPa for sidewalks and patios, 32 MPa for driveways, higher for structural pours. Air entrainment is the key to surviving GTA winters: it gives expanding ice room to migrate within the concrete instead of spalling the surface.

Placing & finishing

We schedule pours for stable weather windows whenever possible. Concrete is placed with proper vibration, screeded flat, and finished with broom, trowel, stamped or exposed-aggregate textures depending on the spec. Edges are tooled, joints cut at the right green-concrete window, and the slab is cured under cover or with curing compound to maintain hydration during the critical first week.

Sealing & maintenance

Properly sealed concrete sheds water, resists road salt and looks better longer. We apply penetrating sealers (silane or siloxane) on exterior work, and offer maintenance re-coats every 3–5 years. Decorative work β€” stamped, coloured, exposed aggregate β€” gets a film-forming sealer to enhance colour.

Repairs & restoration

Existing concrete that's spalling, settling or cracked isn't always a tear-out. We assess each piece and recommend the right intervention: mudjacking or polyurethane lifting for settled slabs, structural repair for cracks, resurfacing for cosmetic damage. Where replacement is the right call, we say so up front.

Materials & specs

Ontario Building Code compliance

Every project is built to current OBC standards. We handle the permit application, prepare the structural and site drawings, coordinate engineer's stamps where required, and book each municipal inspection on your behalf. Final approval documentation is yours to keep on file.

Frequently asked

Concrete Work questions, answered

What's the best time of year for concrete work in the GTA?
Late spring through early fall β€” mid-May through mid-October β€” is the sweet spot. Cold-weather pours are possible with heated enclosures and accelerated mixes when timing demands it.
How long before I can use new concrete?
Walkable in 24–48 hours, driveable on in 7 days, full design strength at 28 days. We provide a use schedule with every job.
Will my concrete crack?
All concrete moves. Properly reinforced and jointed concrete cracks at the control joints, where it's designed to. Plain or poorly jointed concrete cracks randomly. We design for predictable, controlled movement.
What's the difference between stamped and exposed aggregate?
Stamped concrete is textured to mimic stone, brick or wood patterns. Exposed aggregate reveals the natural stones in the mix for a pebbled finish. Both are durable; stamped offers more design flexibility.
Do I need a permit for concrete work?
Patios and walkways usually don't. Structural slabs, foundations, retaining walls over 1m, and any work tied into the foundation typically do. We confirm during the consultation.
Can you match my existing concrete?
We can come close, but exact colour and texture matching is difficult β€” concrete weathers over time. We'll show you sample finishes and recommend the closest match.
